In a study by NASA and researchers from the University of California, Irvine; Indiana University, Bloomington; UC Davis; and the University of Nevada, Reno, they claim that there is a 99.9% chance that the Los Angeles Area will be hit with a magnitude 5.0 or greater earthquake by 2019.

While the U.S. Geological Survey took issue with the study, asserting that the probably is around 85%, when you compare the devastation caused by the 1994 Northridge earthquake that caused $25 billion in damage, killed dozens and injured thousands, its seems like it is a question of when, not if.
