There are a large number of people moving out of the New York region, which seems bad but it is actually a good thing. Since 2010, over a million people have moved out of the New York region, which is a large amount of people. This is actually a good sign that the improved economy in the United States has allowed people to move from a large metropolitan region into places that are less expensive to live in. E.J. McMahon, the Empire Center for Public Policy research director, states:

The historical trend is that out-migration grows when the economy is getting better… As the economy gets better, there are more jobs outside the region… 

Despite this migration of people away from the New York region and the East Coast in general, New York remains the most populous region in the United States.
