Here Comes Another Car Tax

Governor Jerry Brown and the California Democrat leadership have a new gift for us as we approach tax day: Another New Car Tax.

Not just any new car tax, but the biggest gas tax in  California’s history. Besides this historic gas tax increase, this new plan will also raise the vehicle registration fees on every car.

This multi-billion dollar gas tax and vehicle registration fee hike doesn’t offer a guarantee that the money will even go to fix roads.

Currently, the state collects $4 billion a year in gas taxes for roads and transportation. Despite this, Governor Jerry Brown and California’s Democratic leadership (Kevin de Leon – Los Angeles and Anthony Rendon – Paramount) have been diverting billions of dollars from this program to the state’s general fund every year, where the dollars are used for non-transportation purposes.

Now that these politicians have created this problem and our roads are in disrepair, they are looking to pass this problem onto us again with the biggest gas tax hike in California’s history, without any guarantee that this new money will even go towards fixing roads.

The California Department of TransportationTransportation department, unions, and contractors are in an all out PR blitz showing pictures of potholes and damaged roads. Their message is that, “41% of CA’s pavement requires rehab, replacement, or maintenance. New investment would allow us to #FixCARoads.” But as Chico Enterprise Record notes:

“Caltrans knows better than anyone, though, that the state doesn’t need ‘new funding.’ It just needs legislators to stop raiding the old funding for different needs.” 

California can’t afford another car tax with more broken promises. Remember what happened the last time the vehicle registration fees were tripled?
