According to an audit released last month, a California DMV data operator slept three hours a day at her desk for three years and despite complaints from her colleagues, the department failed to take disciplinary action. Investigators from the California State Auditor’s office were told by witnesses that the DMV employee consistently slept at her desk. The auditor believes that the employee misused 2,200 hours of work time between February 2014 and December 2017. The audit also revealed that the employee continues to work for the state.

The DMV reassigned the worker in question to another position in January 2017, but she continued to sleep at work. It’s important to note that in 2016, her doctor informed the department that she could not perform the duties the job required, which means that she may have a medical condition that made it difficult for her to work on a regular schedule. The DMV has been under a lot of scrutiny lately due to long wait lines, despite receiving $17 million in additional funding to reduce the wait times. The DMV recently dodged an audit of the DMV’s management, which was requested to try and figure out why the department was having so many issues with its wait times. Hopefully, the DMV’s issues can be fixed to make the department more efficient.
